A great granduncle of mine died in France a mere two weeks before the end of WWI. Do records exist that would show where his unit was to a reasonable degree of specificity, and would it be possible to ballpark the general area of his death?

I am asking a question in r/ask----------. Why did so many novels used to censor names and places, even if it would be relatively easy to guess from context? When did this trend begin, and why has it largely faded from literature?
